August "Tommy" Tomusk performed the first coronary artery bypass operation in northern Indiana in 1970. His courageous leadership to achieve that first procedure established the heart surgery program at
Lutheran Hospital and formed the beginning of what Indiana/Ohio Heart is today.
Dr. Tomusk was born in Tallin, Estonia, in 1926, and earned his M.D. degree from Karl Eberhard University in Tubingen, Germany, in 1950. After his surgical residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago, and two years with the United States Navy, he established his practice of general, vascular,
and thoracic surgery in Fort Wayne. In 1968, Dr. Tomusk completed his fellowship in cardiovascular surgery at the Texas Heart Institute under the direction of Denton A. Cooley.
